## Two different gases

LNG is natural gas, mostly methane, cooled to about −162 °C until it becomes liquid. It then takes up about 1/600th of its volume as a gas, which makes shipping by sea practical. At the receiving terminal it is warmed back into gas and sent into the pipeline system.

LPG is a mixture of propane and butane. It becomes liquid under moderate pressure, so it is stored and carried in pressurized tanks and cylinders.

| Property | LNG | LPG |
| --- | --- | --- |
| Main components | Methane, with some ethane | Propane and butane |
| How it is kept liquid | Cooled to about −162 °C | Held under pressure |
| Specification | Composition and heating value agreed in the contract | ASTM D1835, including HD-5 propane, or EN 589 |

## How a gas trade is handled

- The buyer names the product, the specification and the quantity.
- The delivery method is fixed by the terminals at each end of the voyage.
- Quality and quantity are measured by an independent inspector.
- Delivery terms are fixed in the contract.
