## What the octane number means

The research octane number, or RON, measures how well a gasoline resists knocking. The higher the number, the more compression the fuel can withstand before it ignites on its own.

RON is measured in a test engine at 600 rpm. The motor octane number, MON, is measured at 900 rpm with a preheated mixture, so it is lower for the same fuel. Pumps in the United States, Canada and Mexico show the average of the two, written (R+M)/2.

| Grade | Research octane number | Position in the market |
| --- | --- | --- |
| RON 98 | 98 minimum | Premium grade |
| RON 95 | 95 minimum | Standard grade in Europe and many other markets |
| RON 92 | 92 minimum | Regular grade where a national specification sets it |

## Standards named in contracts

The specification is named in the contract. Common references are EN 228 in Europe, ASTM D4814 in the United States, or the national standard of the destination country. In the European Union, benzene is limited to 1% by volume in all grades of automotive gasoline.

## How a gasoline trade is handled

- The buyer names the grade, the standard and the quantity.
- Octane and other properties are tested by an independent laboratory.
- Certificates of quality and quantity go with the shipping documents.
- Delivery terms are fixed in the contract.

## Questions we are asked

### Why do European and US pumps show different octane numbers?

European pumps show RON. Pumps in the United States show the average of RON and MON, which is lower for the same fuel.

### Can you supply gasoline blended with ethanol?

Tell us the ethanol or oxygenate content your market allows. It is agreed in the contract.
